The Largest Religious Monument in the World
Angkor Wat, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, is the largest religious monument in the world, covering over 400 acres. Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, it gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. The temple complex represents the pinnacle of Khmer architecture and is considered one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history.
Why It's Memorable:
- The temple's design represents Mount Meru, the home of the gods in Hindu mythology
- Built using sandstone blocks, some weighing up to 1.5 tons, transported from quarries 50 kilometers away
- Intricate bas-reliefs covering over 1,200 square meters, depicting Hindu epics and historical scenes
- The central tower rises 65 meters, surrounded by four smaller towers representing the five peaks of Mount Meru
- Aligned to face west, symbolizing the setting sun and death, unusual for Hindu temples
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the national symbol of Cambodia, appearing on the country's flag
- The complex includes a massive moat, outer walls, and multiple galleries, creating a city within a temple
