Where Ice Meets the Sea
The Ilulissat Icefjord, located on the west coast of Greenland, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves massive icebergs into Disko Bay. The glacier is one of the fastest and most active in the world, producing over 35 cubic kilometers of ice annually. The icefjord stretches 40 kilometers from the glacier to the sea, creating one of the most dramatic natural spectacles on Earth.
Why It's Memorable:
- The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier moves at 19 meters per day, making it one of the fastest-moving glaciers in the world
- Produces 10% of all icebergs in Greenland, including the one that sank the Titanic
- The icebergs can be as large as small cities, some reaching 100 meters above water
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and scientific importance
- The icefjord offers stunning views of calving glaciers and floating icebergs in shades of blue and white
- Located in the Arctic Circle, offering the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter
- Home to traditional Inuit communities that have lived in harmony with the ice for thousands of years
- A powerful symbol of climate change, as the glacier's rapid movement is linked to global warming
