Africa's Rooftop
Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. Located in Tanzania, this dormant volcano consists of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The mountain's snow-capped summit, despite being just 330 kilometers south of the equator, creates one of the world's most dramatic natural contrasts.
Why It's Memorable:
- The highest point in Africa, making it one of the Seven Summits (the highest peak on each continent)
- Climbable without technical mountaineering skills, attracting over 30,000 climbers annually
- The summit features permanent glaciers, though they are rapidly receding due to climate change
- The mountain rises from savanna plains at 900 meters to the summit, creating five distinct climate zones
- Home to unique flora and fauna, including the Kilimanjaro tree heather and the rare Kilimanjaro shrew
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of African natural heritage
- The name means "Mountain of Greatness" or "Mountain of Caravans" in Swahili
- Offers one of the world's most accessible high-altitude climbing experiences
