The Rose-Red City
Petra, established around 312 BCE as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, is an ancient city carved directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs in southern Jordan. The city was a major trading hub, controlling the incense and spice routes between Arabia and the Mediterranean. The most famous structure, Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), stands 40 meters tall and is intricately carved into the cliff face.
Why It's Memorable:
- The entire city was carved from living rock, creating a unique architectural style
- Accessible only through a narrow 1.2-kilometer canyon called the Siq, creating a dramatic entrance
- The Treasury facade, featured in Indiana Jones, is actually a tomb, not a treasury
- The city contains over 800 carved tombs, temples, and structures
- Advanced water management system with channels, cisterns, and dams that collected and stored water
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
- The rose-red color comes from iron oxide in the sandstone, creating stunning visual effects
- Abandoned in the 7th century and lost to the Western world until 1812
