The Heart of Russia
Red Square, the central square of Moscow, is one of the world's most famous public spaces. Flanked by the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, the State Historical Museum, and GUM department store, the square has been the site of coronations, military parades, and major historical events for over 500 years. The name "Red Square" comes from the Russian word "krasny," which originally meant "beautiful" rather than the color red.
Why It's Memorable:
- St. Basil's Cathedral, with its iconic colorful onion domes, was built in the 16th century to commemorate the capture of Kazan
- The square has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990
- Home to Lenin's Mausoleum, where the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin has been on display since 1924
- The Kremlin, a fortified complex that has been the seat of Russian power for over 500 years
- The square has witnessed coronations, executions, military parades, and protests throughout Russian history
- GUM, the historic department store, features stunning 19th-century architecture
- A symbol of Russian history, power, and culture, representing both the tsarist and Soviet eras
- The square measures 330 meters by 70 meters, creating a vast open space in the heart of Moscow
