The Mysterious Stone Circle
Stonehenge, built between 3000 and 2000 BCE, is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England. The monument consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 4 meters high, 2 meters wide, and weighing approximately 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England. The purpose of Stonehenge remains one of archaeology's greatest mysteries.
Why It's Memorable:
- The stones were transported from as far as 240 kilometers away, a remarkable feat for the Neolithic period
- Aligned with the summer and winter solstices, suggesting astronomical and ceremonial significance
- The largest stones, called sarsens, weigh up to 50 tons and were erected using only primitive tools
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting over 1.5 million visitors annually
- The monument was built in several phases over 1,500 years, showing evolving construction techniques
- The purpose remains debated: astronomical observatory, burial ground, healing center, or religious temple
- The surrounding landscape contains hundreds of burial mounds and other ancient monuments
- A symbol of ancient British heritage and one of the world's most famous prehistoric sites
