The Heart of Australia

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of Australia's Red Centre. Rising 348 meters (1,142 feet) above the surrounding desert, with a circumference of 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles), Uluru is one of Australia's most recognizable natural landmarks. Sacred to the Anangu people, the traditional owners, Uluru is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds deep spiritual significance.

Why It's Memorable:

  • Changes color throughout the day, from ochre to deep red to purple at sunset
  • The world's largest monolith, though most of it extends underground
  • Sacred to the Anangu people for over 30,000 years, with creation stories and rock art throughout
  • The surface features caves, waterholes, and ancient Aboriginal paintings
  • Climbing was permanently banned in 2019 out of respect for the traditional owners
  • Located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to unique desert wildlife
  • A symbol of Australia's natural beauty and Indigenous culture
  • The surrounding desert landscape creates a stunning contrast with the red rock
