Nature's Light Show
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is one of nature's most spectacular phenomena. Created when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth's atmosphere, the aurora creates dancing curtains of green, blue, purple, and red light across the polar skies. Best viewed in the Arctic Circle during the winter months, the Northern Lights have inspired myths, legends, and wonder for thousands of years.
Why It's Memorable:
- Visible in the Arctic Circle, with prime viewing locations in Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska
- The aurora occurs when solar particles interact with Earth's magnetic field, creating light at altitudes of 60-200 miles
- Green is the most common color, caused by oxygen molecules, while nitrogen creates blue and purple hues
- The aurora can be seen up to 200 nights per year in the best locations
- Tromsø, Norway, is known as the "Gateway to the Arctic" and one of the best places to view the lights
- The phenomenon is strongest during solar maximum, which occurs in 11-year cycles
- The Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) create the same phenomenon in the Southern Hemisphere
- Ancient cultures believed the lights were spirits, gods, or omens, creating rich mythology around the phenomenon
