The Smoke That Thunders
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya ("The Smoke That Thunders"), is one of the world's largest and most spectacular waterfalls. Located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the falls span 5,604 feet wide and drop 354 feet into a narrow gorge, creating a curtain of water that can be seen from 30 miles away. The falls produce a constant mist that rises over 1,000 feet into the air.
Why It's Memorable:
- One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The largest curtain of falling water in the world, with over 500 million liters per minute during peak flow
- The falls are twice as wide and twice as high as Niagara Falls
- The mist from the falls creates a permanent rainforest ecosystem on the opposite side
- The Devil's Pool, a natural infinity pool on the edge of the falls (accessible during low water season)
- The Victoria Falls Bridge, built in 1905, spans the gorge and connects Zambia and Zimbabwe
- The falls are home to unique flora and fauna adapted to the constant mist and spray
- The lunar rainbow, visible during full moon nights, creates a rare natural phenomenon
