Canada's First National Park

Banff National Park, established in 1885, is Canada's oldest national park and the flagship of the Canadian Rockies. Spanning 2,564 square miles of pristine wilderness, the park is renowned for its turquoise glacial lakes, snow-capped peaks, and abundant wildlife. Lake Louise, with its emerald waters reflecting the surrounding mountains, is one of the most photographed locations in Canada.

Why It's Memorable:

  • Lake Louise, the "Jewel of the Rockies," with its stunning turquoise color from glacial rock flour
  • Moraine Lake, another iconic glacial lake surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks
  • The Icefields Parkway, one of the world's most scenic drives, connecting Banff to Jasper
  • Home to grizzly bears, black bears, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep
  • The Columbia Icefield, one of the largest icefields in the Rocky Mountains
  • Over 1,000 miles of hiking trails through alpine meadows, forests, and mountain passes
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks
  • The town of Banff, the highest town in Canada at 4,537 feet above sea level
