America's First National Park

Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872, was the world's first national park and remains one of the most iconic protected areas on Earth. Spanning 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, Yellowstone is home to over 10,000 hydrothermal features, including the world's largest concentration of geysers. Old Faithful, erupting every 60-90 minutes, has become a symbol of the park's geothermal wonders, while the Grand Prismatic Spring dazzles visitors with its rainbow of colors created by heat-loving bacteria.

Why It's Memorable:

  • Home to over 500 active geysers, more than half of all geysers in the world
  • The Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the United States and third largest in the world
  • Yellowstone Caldera, one of the largest active supervolcanoes on Earth
  • Home to the largest free-roaming bison herd in the United States
  • Over 67 species of mammals, including grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and moose
  • The park contains over 290 waterfalls, including the 308-foot Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve
  • The park's geothermal features are powered by a massive magma chamber just 3-8 miles below the surface
