The Great Migration
The Serengeti National Park, covering 5,700 square miles in northern Tanzania, is one of Africa's most famous wildlife reserves and home to the world's largest mammal migration. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, undertake an annual circular migration in search of fresh grazing, creating one of nature's most spectacular events.
Why It's Memorable:
- The Great Migration, where over 2 million animals travel 1,200 miles in a continuous cycle
- Home to the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and Cape buffalo
- The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's largest intact calderas
- Over 500 bird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise
- The Serengeti is home to the largest lion population in Africa
- Endless savanna plains that stretch to the horizon, creating a sense of infinite space
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity
- The park's ecosystem has remained largely unchanged for over a million years
