The Sound of Silence

Fiordland National Park, covering 4,868 square miles in New Zealand's South Island, is one of the world's most spectacular wilderness areas. The park is home to 14 fiords, including the famous Milford Sound, which Rudyard Kipling called "the eighth wonder of the world." The park's dramatic landscapes, carved by glaciers over millions of years, feature towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and pristine rainforest.

Why It's Memorable:

  • Milford Sound, the most famous fiord, with cliffs rising over 3,900 feet from the water
  • The park receives over 250 inches of rainfall annually, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls
  • Home to the kea, the world's only alpine parrot, known for its intelligence and curiosity
  • The Milford Track, often called "the finest walk in the world," is a 33-mile trek through pristine wilderness
  • The park contains some of the world's oldest and most pristine temperate rainforest
  • Mitre Peak, rising 5,560 feet directly from the water, is one of New Zealand's most photographed landmarks
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Te Wahipounamu, protecting unique flora and fauna
  • The park's isolation and rugged terrain have preserved ecosystems largely unchanged for thousands of years
