The Land of Falling Lakes
Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's oldest and largest national park, is a stunning system of 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls and cascades. The lakes, renowned for their distinctive colors ranging from azure to green, grey, and blue, are separated by natural travertine dams that grow approximately 1 centimeter per year. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's most beautiful natural wonders.
Why It's Memorable:
- Sixteen interconnected lakes arranged in cascading terraces, creating a natural staircase of water
- The lakes' colors change constantly based on mineral content, algae, and sunlight
- Over 90 waterfalls, with the largest, Veliki Slap, dropping 255 feet
- The park contains over 1,200 plant species, including 75 endemic species
- Home to brown bears, wolves, lynx, and over 160 bird species
- The wooden walkways allow visitors to walk over and between the lakes
- The travertine barriers, formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate, grow continuously
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty
